Each
year during the Army Navy Weekend Freedom Alliance presents
the Edward J. Bronars Defender of Freedom Award to an outstanding
individual who exemplifies faith, courage and fidelity in
the face of adversity. The award is presented at the `Annual
Defender of Freedom' Award Dinner held in December during
the Army-Navy Weekend
and Seminar.
The Defender
of Freedom Award is named in honor of LtGen Edward J. Bronars,
who was a United States Marine and served as the first Chairman
of Freedom Alliance. During the Vietnam War, General Bronars
was then-Lieutenant Oliver North’s division commander.
A true American patriot, General Bronars was a Naval Academy
graduate whose 32-year career with the Marine Corps included
distinguished service in both the Korean War and the Vietnam
War. His decorations and awards include
the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, the Distinguished Service
Medal and the Legion of Merit with Combat “V”
for Valor. |
The
11th Annual Defender of Freedom Award was posthumously awarded to Steven Siller, a NYC firefighter who ran through the Brooklyn/Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers on September 11th, where he laid down his life for others. LtCol Oliver North, USMC (Ret.) presented the award to Steven Siller's brother, Frank Siller.
