The U.S. Army’s 10th All-American Bowl took place on Saturday, January 9, 2010, in San Antonio, Texas. It showcased the nation’s top-ranked high school football players and honored 300 of the most committed Soldier Heroes. Freedom Alliance President Tom Kilgannon was in San Antonio to watch the game with senior Army personnel and community leaders from across the country. Kilgannon had the opportunity to participate in four days of events and seminars hosted by the U.S. Army Recruiting Command.
Kilgannon, along with other community leaders, was provided a tour of the Fort Sam Houston Army Medical Department. Several soldiers met with the group to share their personal and professional experiences in the Army, the types of skills they have learned, and the pride they feel in serving our nation. Doctors at the Army’s Department of Physical Therapy explained research they are conducting as how to better train soldiers. Infantry soldiers carry 70-80 pound rucksacks, wear heavy armor, and work in environments of extreme heat or cold. Doctors are concerned about alleviating stress on the knees and ankles to help prevent injuries.
At the Combat Medic Training department, soldiers are trained in a matter of a few months to save the lives of their fellow warriors on the battlefield. Battlefield medicine has improved dramatically in the last ten years and thousands of lives have been saved.
There was also an opportunity to view a demonstration jump by the Army's Elite Parachute team, the Golden Knights. During their careers, these aerial experts have jumped thousands of times. The Army Marksmanship Unit hosted an entertaining demonstration of world class shooting at a local Gun Club.
Tom Kilgannon commented on his experience at the Army’s All-American Bowl activities, saying, “This was a great experience and I am grateful to all who made it possible, but more importantly to all who serve our country.”
“The U.S. Army,” Kilgannon continued, “offers young Americans great opportunities to not only serve our country, but to learn valuable skills, work with respected leaders and motivated peers in a team environment.” He added that “there are great educational benefits that are offered by the Army. I encourage young men or women to consider service in the Army. Most will be surprised at the number of opportunities available to them.” |
