Frequently Asked Questions

Will I need money?

Your tuition covers all billeting (housing), meals, admission to all scheduled activities, and transportation (transportation to and from registration is your responsibility). We recommend that you bring some spending money for any snacks or souvenirs you may wish to purchase.

Can I bring my camera?

Yes! Cameras are allowed, however, some areas of the military bases we visit are classified top secret and do not allow photography. You will be asked to put away your camera when we visit those sites.

How strenuous is the Physical Training (PT)?

Physical training is designed to teach you the importance of physical fitness – it is not meant to be “easy.” We do recognize that different people have different levels of physical ability and tailor the PT to make it enjoyable for everyone.

Will we have free-time?

Yes. Free time is scheduled in the evenings throughout the week.

Can I call home?

You can call home during free time by using a calling card or making a collect call.

What type of weather should I expect?

Since the Academies are held in the summer, we expect that the weather will be very warm. However, the weather is always unpredictable and prepare for rain or chilly weather (It can get very chilly in the barracks in the evenings).

Is this like going to boot camp?

The first couple of days at the Academy are a lot like being in boot camp. Learning how to make your bed, setting up your wall locker and learning how to march are some of the things that you will be doing.

We are very strict and hold everyone to the highest standard. You are expected to work as a team and fulfill your obligations during the week.

That being said, we want you to have a very positive experience and learn a lot about leadership.

Who are the escorts?

The escorts are a mix of Freedom Alliance staff and cadre, military personnel and volunteers.

What is Freedom Alliance?

Freedom Alliance is an educational and charitable organization, founded in 1990 by the late LtGen Ed Bronars, USMC and LtCol Oliver L. North, USMC (Ret.) with the mission of honoring and encouraging military service.

In addition to the Military Leadership Academy, Freedom Alliance operates the Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund which provides scholarships for the dependent children of military personnel killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty. You can learn more about Freedom Alliance by visiting the website at www.freedomalliance.org.

What is the guy to girl ratio?

The male / female ratio averages 50/50.

What will I learn about leadership?

Our leadership curriculum is based upon seven core values: Selfless Service, Integrity, Dependability, Responsibility, Teamwork, Respect and Courage. You will learn why these basic qualities are important in leadership and how to foster their development.

You will also have to opportunity to be placed into a leadership post in the class
chain-of-command, where you will gain practical leadership experience.

Will I need to bring any identification?

A valid photo ID is required to attend the Academy. The preferred type of ID is a drives license. School issued ID cards are acceptable, if they have a photo. If you do not have either of the above, you can get a state issued photo ID card from your local Department of Motor Vehicles.
